The long and lasting bond between Audrey Hepburn and Salvatore Ferragamo began in 1954 when she visited him for the first time in Florence, Italy to be fitted for shoes. After showing his latest creations, Ferragamo took the measurements of Audrey's feet and made the wooden lasts from which he would create numerous styles. The footwear Ferragamo created for Audrey over the years were featured in her movies and became a distinctive element of her style. After Salvatore Ferragamo's death, Audrey remained a faithful client and friend of the family.
In 1999, the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund entered into a joint-venture with Ferragamo to create a travelling retrospective exhibition. This exhibition served as a tribute to Audrey's remarkable life, documenting her career, her humanitarian efforts, and her unique timeless style. Featured in the exhibition were over one hundred garments worn by Audrey in her films and private life, most of which were created by her dear friend and fashion designer, Hubert de Givenchy. Some of the century's other leading designers, such as Valentino, are also represented in the exhibit.

In May 1999, the exhibition opened at the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo in Florence, Italy, where it ran for four months. Subsequently, it was enjoyed by millions of enthusiastic fans in Australia, France, Hong Kong, and throughout a ten city tour in Japan. The exhibit was also seen in Frankfurt, Germany.

Without the generosity and support of Hubert de Givenchy, the success of the Museo Ferragamo exhibition would not have been possible. By loaning the dresses he designed for Audrey to the exhibition and then subsequently donating them to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, he gave back the crowning gift of a lifelong friendship. His generosity made the building of the Audrey Hepburn Children's House at Hackensack University Medical Center a reality.

We would also like to thank Valentino Garavani, Givenchy Couture and Paramount for their generosity.

The Fund's events have included the Restoration Premiere of "MY FAIR LADY" (1995), benefiting the Dornbecher Children's Hospital of Portland, Oregon, and a two week Children's Family Film Festival (1997) in New York held at the Sony Theatres. Two children's movies, "JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH" and "WILD AMERICA" premiered.

The Fund proudly sponsored Mikhail Baryshnikov's, "STORIES FROM MY CHILDHOOD" (1996-1998), a nine hour anthology of award winning classic animation. Originally produced for the big screen by Moscow's acclaimed Soyuzmultfilm Studio, the series has had an international broadcast, including a PBS premiere in the United States and is available on DVD and Video.

In collaboration with the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, Mona & Renee Golabeck recorded a new CD, "BABAR" (1996), narrated by Meryl Streep with music by Poulene, as well as the "THE MOTHER GOOSE SUITE" by Ravel with the New Zealand Symphony, both available in the classical section of music stores.
